I manage the care of my invalid parents from long distance. They live in Chicago in the house they bought in 1958 and I live in Miami. I have made all caregiver decisions and travel to Chicago monthly for more than four years! Perhaps reading about my journey can help you. see my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdXoyf2ByPU

Karla, seems there are many similarities between your life and mine. From reading your various postings it appears that we both share the Catholic faith, are about the same age (I am 50) and had parents older than most of our peers. My dad passed away 18 years ago at age 78 and suffered from Alzheimers. My mom passed away a few weeks before your mom April 5, 2008 at age 88.
My mom lived with us the last 5 years of her life and while I share some of the struggles identified in much of the articles about caregivers, I also found it a wonderful experience for my entire family. I've just started a blog to try to share some of my positives experiences so that others considering providing in-home care for their elderly parents are not frightened away from the prospect. I would also like to help them understand the issues so they go into it with their eyes wide open.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you this coming weekend as we both prepare for the 2nd Mother's Day without our moms.
Ed
